Asphalt Calculator: Tons of Asphalt Needed
Estimate the tons of hot-mix asphalt, base gravel and sealcoat for a driveway, parking pad or repair from the area and compacted thickness.
One ton of hot-mix asphalt covers about 83 square feet at 2 inches thick, or about 55 square feet at 3 inches. A 12 × 50 ft driveway at 2 inches needs roughly 7.3 tons. Formula: area × thickness (inches ÷ 12) × 145 lb/ft³ ÷ 2000 = tons.

How to calculate tons of asphalt
Hot-mix asphalt is sold by the ton. Compacted asphalt weighs about 145 pounds per cubic foot, so one ton covers roughly 83 square feet at 2 inches thick.
Asphalt tons by driveway size (2 in and 3 in compacted)
| Driveway size | Area | Tons at 2 in | Tons at 3 in |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 × 40 ft | 400 sq ft | 4.8 | 7.3 |
| 12 × 50 ft | 600 sq ft | 7.3 | 10.9 |
| 12 × 75 ft | 900 sq ft | 10.9 | 16.3 |
| 16 × 50 ft | 800 sq ft | 9.7 | 14.5 |
| 20 × 60 ft | 1200 sq ft | 14.5 | 21.8 |
| 24 × 100 ft | 2400 sq ft | 29.0 | 43.5 |
| 40 × 100 ft | 4000 sq ft | 48.3 | 72.5 |
Thickness guidance
| Use | Typical compacted thickness |
|---|---|
| Residential driveway | 2–3 in |
| Light-duty parking | 3 in |
| Heavy-duty or truck traffic | 4 in or more |
| Patching / overlay | 1.5–2 in |
The base matters as much as the asphalt
Asphalt is only as good as what is under it. A well-compacted 4–8 inch crushed-stone base (see the gravel calculator) keeps the surface from cracking and heaving. Many contractors lay asphalt in two lifts — a binder course and a thinner surface course — and compact each while hot.
Sealcoating
New asphalt should cure for 6–12 months before sealing. Sealcoat then protects it every 2–3 years. The estimate above uses roughly 80 square feet per gallon for two thin coats; check the product label.
Asphalt vs. concrete
Asphalt usually costs less up front and is easier to repair, but needs periodic sealing. Concrete lasts longer with less maintenance but costs more and cracks more visibly. Price both with the concrete calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How many square feet does a ton of asphalt cover?
At 2 inches compacted thickness, one ton covers about 80–85 square feet. At 3 inches, about 55 square feet.
How thick should an asphalt driveway be?
2 to 3 inches of compacted asphalt over a 4–8 inch stone base is standard for passenger vehicles.
How much asphalt do I need for a 12×50 driveway?
A 12 × 50 ft driveway (600 sq ft) at 2 inches needs about 7.6 tons including 5% waste, and about 11.4 tons at 3 inches.
Why add extra to the estimate?
Asphalt is delivered hot, can't be stored, and trucks have minimum loads, so contractors order slightly over. Five percent is common.
How much does asphalt cost per ton?
Hot-mix asphalt commonly runs about $100–$150 per ton delivered, varying by region and oil prices. Installed driveways are often quoted per square foot.
How long should new asphalt cure before driving on it?
Light vehicles can usually drive on it after 24–72 hours in mild weather; avoid turning the wheels while stopped for the first weeks.
How much asphalt does a pothole repair need?
A 2 × 2 ft patch, 2 inches deep, is about 0.67 cubic feet — roughly 95–100 lb of asphalt, or two 50-lb bags of cold patch.
Is asphalt cheaper than concrete?
Usually yes up front, but concrete lasts longer. Compare 20-year costs, including sealing and repairs.
